Fashion tech. Those are two words that don’t really go together. Or do they? If Fashion Innovations has anything to do with it, they will become the new norm.
Fashion Innovations is back again this August 8-10
at Co-Merge downtown. It is San Diego’s 2nd fashion-themed entrepreneurial 54-hour workshop and competition. They focus on the education of the fashion industry in the area of fashion technology and how it extends beyond textiles. There are so many ways that our community can use fashion tech, for example: apps, 3D printing, using computers to dress us, games to teach styling (such as http://www.covetfashion.com
) just to name a few.
Fashion Innovations is having a hard time getting the fashion industry to understand tech. And the tech world doesn’t really understand what the words ‘fashion tech’ even mean. Many tech companies think that they have nothing in common with the fashion world. What they don’t realize is that fashion is the number one industry in the world and is always on the cutting edge. Fashion Innovations is working on opening up those doors between the tech and fashion worlds-exploring the ideas of eCommerce, wearable technology and more.
San Diego has had the prestigious honor of being only the third city in the ENTIRE WORLD that has had a fashion-focused tech Startup Weekend. Highlights from last year’s event included a presentation from an extraordinary company called Electrozyme
who make temporary tattoos that can analyze your sweat to assess your health. Qualcomm also was there showing a demonstration of their new smartwatch and they didn’t just send a salesperson to speak. Attendees and guests got to hear from the actual inventor and VP/Lead of the project.
So, Fashion Innovations and fashion tech are a BIG deal, specifically here in San Diego. If you’ve got a fashion tech business idea that you’ve been kicking around, then this is the perfect chance for you to get help bringing your idea to life! Learn lean methods and meet others excited about Fashion Innovations (think Pinterest, Polyvore, Google Glass, etc.). Attendees pitch their ideas on Friday and form teams with other attendees. They then build a prototype and validate it with potential customers through the weekend. They get the opportunity to work with mentors provided by the event to hone their pitches and present to a panel of judges Sunday evening. All participants are provided with 7 outstanding meals, unlimited drinks and snacks, as well as a gift bag. The winning teams get prizes to help them move their business forward.
Intrigued, but not sure if you want to participate? This is an event that actually encourages spectators at the Friday night event (when everyone presents their pitches) and the Sunday evening event (when everyone presents their finished products). So come for the inspiration!
